Buying Vittles Vault 50-Pound

I had a raccoon problem with cat food stored in my barn. I tried several different containers and deterrents that were complete failures, but thought this container would truly foil them. It took them exactly three days to figure out how to unscrew the lid even when I screwed it tightly. They'd then have their fill of the contents. Then accidentally I discovered a solution that has worked ever since (over a year now). I found if I threw an old used horse blanket over the container, they didn't touch it. Is it out of sight, out of mind? Is the horse smell unappealing or masking the cat food smell? I can't tell you, only that it works completely. When I needed the blanket come winter, I began using an old and hopelessly torn horse sheet that I would otherwise have thrown away. I got the same result. It's just a light covering and would be easy to pull away, but they don't touch it.

The container itself put up with a fair amount of abuse from them when they were knocking it over and dislodging the lid every night, but it wasn't damaged at all and still provides excellent storage for the cat food. The screw lid is easy for me to remove and put back on and the generous opening makes dumping the food into it from a bag pretty easy. It also makes it easy for me to scoop the feed out. I like the compact size of the container as it doesn't take up much room.

If you have critters, I would not leave this container outside, but when sheltered and with even a light horse sheet carelessly draped over it, it has provided excellent cat food storage that is easy for me to access and completely unattractive to unwanted visitors.
